My email to Rob Portman, regarding his vote not to table the Blunt amendment
I'm wondering if you read this amendment and fully understood the scope of it. This amendment, as written, would have allowed a business owner to decline to offer coverage for anything he/she had a religious or moral inclination against. Anything. Your obvious intent must have been to destroy insurance coverage in this country. Imagine the new problems in job hunting: not only do you have to find someone who's hiring, but have to worry if your beliefs will be the same as your employers. Tolerance for someone's beliefs does not mean that they get to foist their beliefs onto someone else. That moves from tolerance to coercion, from freedom of religion to governance by religion. And that is not what the founding fathers planned or envisioned.
