The Skeptic’s Ten Commandments « Science-Based Life
Apply well to a great many areas: not just science. Think relationships. The person who promises you the moon: is it really possible for them to deliver? This area [relationships] comes to mind especially today, as a co-worker just spilled her tale of woe, allowing herself to be pushed/cajoled into signing the loan for her live-in boyfriend's car. He made a lot of promises to keep up with payments: but has a long record of broken promises. Her need to be in a relationship blinds her to the reality of the situation.
But it applies as well to the relationship between voters and politicians doesn't it. They keep promising to do right by us, but they don't deliver. And they [some of them] keep lying to their base, and the base keeps believing them. The base listens to unsupported 'facts' and spreads them like wildfire. While the voice of reason is ignored or attacked, not by presentation of opposing facts, but by personal attacks on the person who dares speak facts.
