If you buy a new refrigerator, and they try to sell you an extended warranty plan: ask if it covers the control panel or circuit boards. If it does, buy it!
I passed on the extended warranty on my new LG frig, with the lovely french doors and bottom freezer. It had a 1 year manufacturer's warranty on the unit, with 7 years on condensor, compressor and evaporator. And that's the stuff that used to go bad on a frig. Not anymore. It's those lovely little electronic components, that can zap out without any warning, and leave you looking into a dark frig, wondering just how long it's been that way and if your food is still useable. And it costs a bundle to replace. In my case, $236. plus a yet-to-be-determined amount for expedited shipping of the part ["we can have it tomorrow, or we can have it Monday, which would you prefer?"]. And the replacement board has only a 90 day warranty.
Yes, it is a lot quieter than my Sears Kenmore was. And it uses less electricity. But the Sears Kenmore hummed along for 23 years without a lick of trouble. The LG: 2 years and 8 months. And now I have to wonder, each time I open the door: will it be working?
