Charlie Pierce on the attack on voting rights.
-The same dynamic prevails when Congressman John Lewis of Georgia talks to you about voting rights. Nobody knows more than he does about their value because nobody knows more than he does about what they've cost. He was beaten nearly to death in the struggle for them. John Lewis tells you something about voting rights and you say, yes, sir, and you shut the fk up.
Read the comments and be sad. People are still claiming that these voting rights reductions are made solely to stop ballot fraud. Even though the people pushing the laws through can't find any evidence of massive voter fraud. It's a problem the size of a flea. But that flea is biting the elephant in the room, so it must be wiped out. No matter how many citizens it disenfranchises. No matter how much it costs already cash strapped boards of election. [Hey, maybe we should let private companies take over the boards of election! Yea! They could run it better, and someone could make some money off it! Of course, it would mean cutting back in some ways, to save money. Scrap those early voting days, weekend voting, 12 hour voting days. Better, more efficient voting, brought to you by SellAVote!]
