Use of the Pinhole Testing Device in an eye exam
At the eye center, after cataract surgery.
The technician hands me a lorgnette occluder.
Cover first one eye, then the other
And look at the letter chart
Then drop the pinhole testing device and look again
And the letters that had been blurred are now crystal clear
And the thought came to me
the women of Islam, those who wear the burqa
I had thought their vision obscured by the garment.
Does the woven screen instead act as does the pinhole testing device?
Does it make so terribly sharp and clear their vision
so they see full well
the world they're forced to inhabit?
