93 Mile Rail Trail Underway - Newsroom: Bernie Sanders - U.S. Senator for Vermont
The defunct railroad in my home town offered to give their right of way to the town, for a rail trail. The offer had to be declined, as several residents owning property along the rail lines objected. They had grown accustomed to using that property as their own. And they for sure didn't want strangers actually walking along that trail! Horrors! Since the most vocal of the opponents was also the one of the elected town council members [and one known for badgering and out-shouting all other members] the Nays carried the day. No trail.
That member of council: the one who insisted that her property rights included the rail road lines? Later decided that since the town had an easement between the road bed and her property, that the town should be responsible for mowing and maintenance on the area. The rest of the town laughed at her, shook their heads as they drove past the well kept lawn with the weed filled border. I think the town eventually sent in someone to weed whip and then sent her a bill.
That same member of council then objected to people 'speeding' past her property. And had the village install speed bumps at her corner. When passersby then started going around the speed bumps, she had them extended to cross the entire street. Oh, what hoot! The speed bumps disappeared after a bit.
So why do we let the bullies have their way, instead of just ignoring them or shutting them up?
